Telefónica Foundation are pleased to present the first session of Art and Technology Program, “VIDA 2013” at Laboratorio Arte Alameda. The educational and outreach program is intended to show along with the winning artists and experts in the field of the forms that take part in both art and artificial life. It seeks after promotion and contact with the winning artists, to promote the production on both the theoretical and practical development in the field of art and artificial life, as well as inaugurate a framework for dialogue with the public about the mission and goals of the contest.

Hybrid ecosystems, symbiotic systems and environmental awareness | Our problematic relationship with the natural environment, the usage of autonomous hybrid systems for its monitoring and the usage of bio-information that is collected from them, defines some of the most innovative proposals at VIDA. It is situated in a context where the information provided by machines and specific interfaces offers concrete ways to consider environmental awareness. This trend is also one of the emerging forms of creation of more interest today for its social and techno scientific dimension.

Colloquium: Hybrid ecosystems, symbiotic systems and ecological consciousness

Gilberto Esparza, Christa Sommerer, Laurent Mignonneau | Moderador: Iván Abreu
July 18th | 11:30 hrs

Workshop: Solar Insects by Christa Sommerer and Laurent Mignonneau

by Christa Sommerer and Laurent Mignonneau
July 18th, 19th and 20th
Participants will learn how to build little critters that are powered by solar energy. These bugs
can generate audio and visual signals as well as vibrations. They can sense their environment
and interact with each other.

Concert: Tornado

Iván Abreu
July 20th, 19:00 hrs
From a special music stand designed for sensing the modification of the air when flipping the pages of a book, the artist improvises a sound piece made up of different books -each one with predetermined sounds-. The stand sense the air through a wind sensor and send the data to a software developed by the artist; then this data turns into the sounds perceived in the live act. Each book has specific physical features and content.

This piece is the result of a research about the residual uses of a book as turning pages without paying attention. The project started as an installation that become into a sound sculpture and a live act that stress qualities that, a priori, books would not have. This time, focusing on the topic “hybrid ecosystems, symbiotic system y environmental awareness” the art piece will be an spatialized sound sculpture where the audience can feel a tornado activated by flipping pages of different books. So, the environmental awareness is generated by a climate agent that emerge from a residual and specific gesture.
